Olympus America Inc. Principal Technician in Southborough, Massachusetts
As a Principal Technician working on the Urology/Gynecology team, you will be empowered and inspired to do your best work. You will contribute to our mission by developing test systems, executing test methods, and taking a significant role in the planning, organization, and maintenance of the research labs and model shop. A typical day for you will include:
*Working with engineering team members to develop reliable and repeatable test methods. *Support the engineering department with procuring engineering parts and equipment, and with 3D modeling and drawings in Solidworks.
*Maintain and manage equipment calibration, test equipment, and lab work areas.
Maintain responsibility for the planning, execution, analysis and reporting of medical device testing.
Developing and writing test protocols and reports, directing and organizing other Technicians, as well as Engineering Co-op Students in testing and analysis activities.
Partnering with engineering staff in the development of test and assembly fixtures and recommend and use appropriate test equipment.
Training engineering staff in the use of test and assembly fixtures and test equipment.
Planning, organizing, training, and directing other Technicians and Co-Op Students in testing, analysis, building, and repair activities.
Specifying or recommending personnel requirements for testing, analysis, building and repair activities, participate in the interview process to obtain proper personnel for these activities.
Leading the planning and organization direction of R&D technicians and/or co-op students in design and build of new test or assembly fixtures and/or tooling and repair or upgrade of existing fixtures.
Assembling R&D mechanical prototypes to specification.
Performing testing, analyze data statistically, interpret results, and create reports.
Creating, reading, and taking direction from detailed design drawings, especially test and assembly fixtures.
Creating solid models for test fixtures, design fixtures, modify existing designs, and work with the machine shop or 3D printer to fabricate designs.
Planning and facilitating procurement of materials and tools necessary for test or build activities.
Taking precise measurements of components parts.
Providing design input on rework and modification of products.
Reworking/modifying products to achieve proper function.
Updating solid models and drawing with proposed changes.
Working with Model Shop, 3D Printer or outside vendor to create prototypes reflecting these modifications.
Managing lab infrastructure which may include calibration, safety, maintenance of equipment, cleaning services, and hazardous waste removal.
Performing other related duties as directed or as self-initiated based on perceived need.
Associate’s Engineering Degree or equivalent is required; Bachelor's Degree is a plus.
Minimum of 9 years experience designing test, tool and assembly fixtures and complex electromechanical testing and assembly.
Ability to model and perform simple design work in SolidWorks.
Medical device experience is desired.
Strong technical writing skills.
Good manual dexterity and the ability to operate electromechanical measurement/test equipment and prototype tool/fixtures.
Ability to research, design and/or recommend electromechanical measurement/test equipment and prototype tool/fixtures.
Ability to create, read and properly interpret engineering drawings and take technical instruction from co-workers, supervisors and other professional personnel.
Ability to plan, schedule, train, recommend and direct peers and subordinate technical personnel in testing, assembly, repair and analysis of medical devices.
Ability to manage outside services to the lab and to coordinate equipment calibration efforts.
Ability to perform statistical analysis and interpret data in reports.

The R&D Electromechanical Principal Technician will work with minimal input from engineering staff to build prototypes, design test fixtures, conduct testing of medical devices, create protocols, train others in test methods and create reports. The incumbent will analyze test results, including performing statistical analysis on the data and interpreting the results in reports. He/She will also manage lab infrastructure which may include calibration, safety, maintenance of equipment, cleaning services and be responsible for the handling and disposal of hazardous/biological waste.
