Job Duties::

As a Product Manager working on the Upstream Marketing team, you will be empowered and inspired to do your best work. You will contribute to our mission by focusing on customer needs, customer satisfaction, and changing the lives of patients trough medical innovation and technology. A typical day for you will include:

  • Assisting with executing the annual product franchise plan.

  • Developing product strategies, market positioning, pricing, programs, competitive analysis and distribution pathways to best grow the franchise while remaining consistent with the overall GI & Respiratory business strategy.

  • Gathering voice of customer to develop clear user requirements for future product offerings, and helps in creation of product specifications in collaboration with R&D and OEM partners.

  • Evaluating integrating ideas based on competitive products or existing Olympus Surgical Technologies of America (OSTA) products.

  • Participating in product design meetings to discuss and exchange ideas and concepts to meet the demands of the market place.

  • Working closely with R&D or individually in identifying unmet customer needs for new product/business opportunity and assisting R&D in developing the concepts/prototypes/invention disclosures/patents. This involves understanding the clinical need, translating clinical needs to a product, developing a business case for the opportunity and presenting business case to Sr. Management.

  • Leading market research activities with clinicians to gather critical details which will contribute to the user requirements and product specifications for the project. Results of the research will be shared with other functions or within the marketing department.

  • Coordinating activities with Healthcare Professionals to understand clinical and technical attributes of current and future products.

  • Developing initial marketing plan, which contain the launch plan for new products, plans for global training, competitive assessment and benchmarking, an analysis of the current competitive situation, positioning of the product in the market, and product pricing. This function involves:

  • Reviewing and analyzing market studies, trade literature, and internet sources to formulate ideas and opinions on areas of opportunity presented by the market place.

  • Maintaining files of competitive material for reference.

  • Selecting beta sites for product testing and evaluation.

  • Establishing test parameters and the procedures for evaluating test results.

  • Comparing the performance characteristics of Olympus Surgical Technologies of America products.

  • Translating performance characteristic superiority into benefits for the customer who purchases Olympus Surgical Technologies of America products. This might include preparing a market positioning strategy to guide product development team to collect/provide data such as clinical benefits, economic value, engineering proof, etc.

  • Providing leadership and direction to the product development Iaunch team through all phases of product pre-launch, which include establishing appropriate inventory levels of product, ensuring that all regulatory requirements have been addressed, arranging for a complete product evaluation.

  • Arranging animal/cadaver labs for the purpose of product testing / evaluation / training, including identifying surgeon investigators.

  • Also supporting the Product Development team in writing the lab protocols, preparing interview guides, collecting feedback during evaluations and analysis of the data collected.

  • Comparing the performance characteristics of OSTA products with those of competitive products.

  • Attending/supporting training classes on OSTA products by translating performance characteristic superiority into benefits for the customer who purchases OSTA products.

The Product Manager, Upstream Marketing - GI & Respiratory will report to the Senior Product Manager responsible for managing the global marketing product development responsibilities for new product introductions that have been identified as necessary to grow the GI & Respiratory business franchise. The incumbent will also oversee the worldwide sales for legacy products within his/her areas of responsibility. He/She will interface closely with R&D, International/Downstream Marketing, Sales, RA/QA, and Operations functions to establish potential for revenue, profit, and market share. These key metrics are used to decide on the path for possible product commercialization. The incumbent also works closely with all functional areas to refine user requirements and determine the project's scope. The primary foci are future business opportunities, identification of customer needs, identification of clinical evaluators, management of the prototype evaluations process, and support for regulatory compliance as needed (510(k), PMA). This requires a very good understanding of the clinical usage, market needs, market trends, competitive forces, and competitive technologies. He/She will work closely with Downstream Marketing counterpart(s) of each region during formal launch and transitioning of the product to commercialization. The incumbent will work closely with R&D from multiple centers around the world to develop new products and evaluate them with identified clinicians.

Job Requirements::

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering, life sciences or marketing is required or equivalent experience is required.

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience providing overall leadership in the market as well as evaluating a given market and assessing strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, and developing and implementing strategies; OR, a Master’s/MBA with a minimum of 3 years is required.

  • INTERNAL CANDIDATES: Bachelor's Degree in Marketing or related field with a minimum of 3 years Olympus experience combined sales/marketing/operations/sales support/upstream/R&D/service is required; OR, a Master’s/MBA with a minimum of 2 years Olympus combined experience as above is required.

  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience (product development, product/technical marketing and/or clinical expertise) with significant focus in the medical device business.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated track record in Market Research. VOC (Voice of Customer) with physicians is preferred.

  • Demonstrated track record in achieving results, profitability, growth, and business leadership in the medical device market.

  • Any engineering, clinical or sales experience is a plus.
